Valued at USD 14.6 Billion in 2025, the methanol ships market is projected to reach USD 16.4 Billion in 2026 and USD 43.2 Billion by 2034, growing at a CAGR of 12.9% during the forecast period 2026–2034. Major companies include A.P. Moller - Maersk A/S, China COSCO Shipping, CMA CGM Group, Damen Shipyards Group, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., Samsung Heavy Industries Co., Ltd., Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., Yangzijiang Shipbuilding (Holdings) Ltd., MAN Energy Solutions SE, Wärtsilä Corporation, MOL, NYK Line, HMM Co., Ltd., OCI N.V., and Waterfront Shipping Ltd. This article examines passenger vessels, fuel supply and propulsion, the areas most likely to shape the next stage of growth.

Ferries and Cruise Ships Open a Passenger Segment

Ferries and cruise ships are expected to grow at a CAGR of 13.5% during the forecast period, ahead of the overall market, owing to increasing focus on sustainable passenger transport and emission reduction on coastal and short-distance routes. Operators are adopting methanol-powered systems to meet strict maritime regulations and improve environmental performance.

Methanol suits these operators because it produces lower sulfur oxide, nitrogen oxide and particulate emissions than conventional marine fuels, and its storage and handling offer benefits over some alternative fuels. Operators of ferries and cruise ships therefore represent a growing customer group alongside container lines.

E-Methanol and Bio-Methanol Expand Fuel Supply

According to the Methanol Institute, as of March 2026 there were 263 renewable methanol projects globally, with projected capacity of 48.5 million tons through 2031. Of that total, 23.8 million tons are e-methanol and 24.7 million tons are bio-methanol, a near-even split between the two pathways.

Technology development is adding supply. In October 2025, European Energy introduced new technologies aimed at raising efficiency and producing methanol in larger quantities from renewable energy. Investment in alternative fuel research is expected to increase methanol supplies for the maritime industry, and greater fuel availability lowers barriers to adoption.

Fuel Cells and Propulsion Technology

Internal combustion engines held the largest propulsion share in 2025 because they suit existing vessel designs and allow easy retrofitting to run on methanol; ship owners value their reliability, efficiency and low cost. Fuel cells, however, are expected to grow at the fastest pace as interest in clean energy propulsion increases. Methanol-based fuel cells offer lower emissions and higher efficiency than traditional systems, which makes fuel cells the technology to watch alongside hybrid propulsion.

Shipping Decarbonization as the Core Catalyst

Shipping decarbonization underpins the market. The International Maritime Organization plans a minimum 40% reduction in carbon intensity by 2030 and 70% by 2050. In a Polaris comparison, methanol offers easy storage, growing infrastructure and moderate cost, versus complex storage and limited infrastructure for ammonia, positioning it as a practical compromise for near-term adoption.

Asia is central to supply. China accounted for 46% of global completed tonnage and 63.5% of new shipbuilding orders in 2023, and output rose 52% in 2024 to 87.11 million DWT. Major shipyards in China and South Korea are increasing production of methanol-ready vessels. In Europe, the European Investment Bank estimates that EU nations spent around USD 118 billion on renewable energy production in 2023, and favorable shipping laws encourage new ship acquisitions, while the UAE is emerging as a key bunkering point for alternative marine fuels.

Investment and Cost Considerations

Methanol Ships place container ship costs at USD 120M–160M, tankers at USD 90M–130M and bulk carriers at USD 70M–110M. The CAPEX premium over conventional vessels is estimated at 8–12% for small ships, 10–15% for mid-size and 15–20% for large ships. High conversion and infrastructure costs remain a restraint, particularly for small and mid-sized fleet operators.

The report outlines a fleet transition timeline: pilot projects in 2025–2027, rising orders and infrastructure from 2028 to 2032, and mass adoption in 2033–2035. Polaris rates methanol ROI as high over a 10-year lifecycle, against medium for LNG.
