Hydropower storage systems, more commonly known as pumped storage hydropower (PSH), are a powerful and proven method of energy storage. These systems are essentially a means of converting electrical energy into potential energy by moving water from a lower reservoir to a higher one. They are unique in their ability to store energy on a massive scale for a long duration, from hours to weeks, which is a capability that is crucial for managing the output of intermittent renewable energy sources.

The operation of hydropower storage systems is a classic example of balancing supply and demand. During periods of low electricity demand, when electricity is cheap, a plant pumps water to an upper reservoir, effectively "charging" the system. When demand for electricity is high, the stored water is released to generate power, "discharging" the system and providing clean, on-demand electricity. Beyond simply storing energy, these systems provide a host of essential grid services. They can quickly ramp up or down to stabilize grid frequency and voltage, providing an invaluable buffer against sudden fluctuations in supply or demand. The high efficiency and long lifespan of these systems make them a vital component for building a resilient and sustainable energy grid.
