Clash of Clans Update – Major Gameplay & Trap Changes
Clash of Clans has launched a major update that introduces a variety of gameplay enhancements and rebalancing changes, aiming to shake up the strategic landscape. Among the notable updates is the removal of endgame weapon levels for town halls 12 through 15, which now display a fixed level 1 weapon that retains the highest previous stats, though any ongoing upgrades are canceled without refunds.
Spring traps have been redesigned for more predictable behavior. When triggered, they target the troop with the largest housing space within their damage radius after a brief delay. If that troop’s housing space fits within the trap’s capacity, the troop is ejected; otherwise, it receives heavy damage, with heroes receiving only half damage. Surviving troops are briefly stunned and floated, while dead ones are expelled. This rework applies to builder base spring traps as well, with level 5 now available and the capacity increased to four units.
Additional defensive adjustments include Diggy now stunning targets upon surfacing, and the Grand Warden’s speed boost from the heroic torch now also increases its movement speed, reducing its tendency to follow boogers. The furnace’s damage has been slightly decreased to prevent maxed Firemites from killing maxed healers easily.
User interface improvements feature a streamlined town hall description, hero ability level bars for builder base heroes, and clearer stats such as the poison damage of the Headhunter. Equipment organization now sorts items with common equipment first, following the blacksmith unlock sequence, and no longer auto-rearranges based on item level. Clashmas trees display their respective years, and clan games always show a full set of tasks for both village and builder base.
Players can now attack in Legend League immediately after maintenance without delay. The update also introduces new skins like Space AQ, Egypt GW, and Clashoween 2024 AQ, alongside new equipment such as the Snake Bracelet and Action Figure, and decorations including the Dragon Pinata and Haaland Statue.
Support for the Amazon Appstore has been discontinued, and compatibility is dropped for iOS versions 14 and below, as well as Android 6 and below. Numerous bug fixes address issues like units getting stuck in walls, improper interactions between penetrating projectiles and ice blocks, and incorrect resource display during forge operations.
Resource costs and upgrade times across many defenses, troops, spells, heroes, and pets have been reduced, making progression faster. Notably, the five hero levels for Barbarian King, Archer Queen, and Grand Warden have been shifted from Town Hall 15 to Town Hall 14 to streamline hero advancement. Additionally, there is now a loot bonus for attacking higher Town Halls, encouraging players to challenge stronger opponents and diversify their attack strategies.
In Clash of Clans, attacking bases at different levels relative to your own presents varying odds.
Attacks on targets three levels below are quite infrequent, occurring roughly once or twice per thousand battles.
Those on two levels below happen somewhat more often, with a probability of about 2-8%, which tends to decrease as your town hall level rises, though at maximum town hall levels, this can climb back to around 5%.
Conversely, assaults on bases two levels above your own are exceedingly rare, with fewer than one in a thousand battles involving such attacks.
Recently, a significant change was made to loot mechanics: the payout from loot carts was halved from 20% to 10% of the largest defense taken. This adjustment aims to balance income distribution and emphasize other gameplay features.
Under the new system, attackers still earn the expected loot, and the first attack on a defender spawns a loot cart reflecting 10% of resources stolen.
If subsequent attacks loot less of a resource, the cart isn’t reduced; if they loot more, only that resource's value updates accordingly.
A major overhaul also removed village guards and replaced traditional shields with a new system called magic shields.
This change aims to simplify mechanics, reduce surprise attacks, and re-enable revenge options.
Shields awarded after a shield expires or after defenses that didn’t grant shields are eliminated, and shields are no longer available for purchase in the shop.
Under the new rules, shields now serve to protect loot by transforming incoming attacks into “shadow base” attacks.
A magic shield is granted only if an attacker steals at least 30% of the defender’s available loot during an attack, with the calculation scaled appropriately for dark elixir.
The shield persists for exactly 8 hours, regardless of league or destruction percentage.
While under a magic shield, the base can still be attacked; however, such attacks target a shadow version of the base, meaning no real loot or trophies are lost. Loot and trophies from these attacks are generated by the game’s economy, and defenders can see the results of mirror attacks.
Attack logs continue to display all stolen resources and trophies, so players do not know if they attacked a shadow base.
Magic shields can be purchased in the shop at the same prices as previous shields, with options for 1 day, 2 days, or a week, and players may manually remove shields if desired.
Existing shields automatically convert to magic shields upon update; if a shield lasted longer than 8 hours, it becomes a magic shield of equivalent duration.
Returning players receive a 48-hour magic shield instead of the previous 24-hour guard to encourage re-engagement.
In the top league, players can buy a special “legend shield” that prevents all attacks during its duration and applies for the entire following league day. Players with a legend shield cannot attack or be attacked during this time.
Compared to the old system, where shields activated after at least 30% destruction and deploying at least one-third of a full army, the new system bases shield awarding solely on the percentage of loot stolen.
If an attack steals less than 30% of available resources, no magic shield is granted, leaving the base vulnerable to further defenses.
A new feature introduces a mirror (shadow) base into the matchmaking pool, allowing players to attack it just like a regular base.
The defender can review the replay and results of these mirror attacks but does not gain any loot or trophies from them.
Previously, attacking while shielded would deduct over three hours from the remaining shield time, with further penalties for successive attacks.
Now, attacking or revenge attacking while under a magic shield no longer reduces the shield’s duration.
Revenge mechanics have been reactivated for battles that triggered a magic shield on the defender.
To qualify for revenge, the attacker must have taken at least 30% of the defender’s available loot during their attack.
If the battle replay is invalid or incompatible, revenge cannot be performed.
Revenge can be carried out against a shadow base even if the defender still has an active magic shield, but targets without a shield do not receive one when retaliated against.
Defenders have a 12-hour window after a defense to perform a revenge attack.
Shields purchased from the shop retain the same gem costs and cooldowns as before, and dismissing a magic shield remains an option.
Successful revenge attacks can yield resources like gold, elixir, dark elixir, event currency, chests, league bonuses, and stars contributing to daily star bonuses.
A top-up mechanic ensures the revenger recovers at least the amount stolen in the initial attack:
- If the attacker stole 1 million gold but the shadow only has 500k, the system tops up the shadow to 1 million for the revenge.
- If the shadow has 1 million or more, revenge proceeds normally.
- The top-up is evenly distributed among collectors, storages, and treasury where applicable.
Attacks where less than 30% of the loot was stolen do not grant a magic shield, and attacks on mirrored bases (which do not trigger shields) cannot be revenge-attacked.
Re-revenge—revenge against a shadow base that was previously attacked—is not permitted.
Revenge attacks on unshielded bases are performed against their shadow and do not trigger a new magic shield for the defender.
Players can attack in the Legend League immediately after maintenance without delay.
Additional minor updates include new village export fields for goblin workers, helpers, and active boosts.
These core changes aim to streamline gameplay and enhance strategic options during wars and farming.
