What Home Modifications Do I Need for a Shoulder Fracture?

A shoulder fracture can make simple tasks such as dressing, cooking and sleeping much harder, particularly while your arm is supported in a sling. A few temporary home modifications can improve comfort, reduce fall risk and help you manage daily activities more safely during recovery.

Make Everyday Items Easier to Reach

For the first few weeks, avoid relying on your injured arm for lifting, reaching or carrying unless your clinical team has told you otherwise. Guidance for proximal humerus fractures commonly limits heavy lifting during early healing, although your exact restrictions will depend on the fracture.

Before returning home, move frequently used items to around waist or chest height. This reduces the need to reach into high cupboards, bend deeply or climb onto stools.

Consider relocating:

  • Plates, mugs and cooking utensils

  • Toiletries and medication

  • Phone chargers and remote controls

  • Frequently worn clothes

  • Food stored on high or low shelves

  • Work equipment you use every day

Keep lightweight items within easy reach of your uninjured side. A smaller kettle or partially filled container may also be easier to manage than lifting something heavy with one hand.

If possible, prepare simple meals in advance or ask someone to help with shopping, cooking and heavier household tasks. NHS advice on preventing falls also recommends asking for help rather than attempting difficult lifting or reaching tasks when you are at increased risk.

Adapt Your Bedroom and Bathroom

Sleeping can be uncomfortable after a shoulder fracture. Many patients find it easier to sleep in a more upright position, particularly during the early stages of recovery.

Use extra pillows to raise your upper body and support yourself comfortably in bed. Some people prefer a reclining chair temporarily. Follow the instructions you receive about whether your sling should remain on overnight, as this varies according to the fracture and treatment plan.

Clothing can also make a significant difference. Loose tops, front-opening shirts and clothing with simple fastenings are usually easier to manage with one arm. When getting dressed, it is commonly recommended to place the injured arm into the sleeve first and remove it last when undressing.

In the bathroom, keep toiletries at an accessible height and consider a non-slip shower mat. If you feel unsteady, grab rails or a shower seat may also make washing safer.

Maintaining hygiene around the armpit is particularly important when wearing a sling. Depending on your instructions, you may be able to remove the sling temporarily while washing and allow the arm to hang gently so you can clean and dry the area.

Reduce the Risk of Another Fall

Many shoulder fractures occur after a fall, so preventing another accident while your movement is restricted should be a priority.

Walk through your home and remove unnecessary obstacles. Clear loose cables, clutter and unstable rugs from common routes between your bedroom, bathroom, kitchen and living area.

Other useful changes include:

  • Using non-slip mats in the bathroom

  • Keeping stairways and hallways well lit

  • Wearing supportive footwear with good grip

  • Avoiding loose slippers

  • Keeping essential items within comfortable reach

  • Avoiding stools or chairs for reaching high shelves

These changes are especially important if you live alone or already have difficulties with balance or mobility. NHS falls guidance recommends removing trip hazards, improving access to regularly used items and considering grab rails where appropriate.

Keep your mobile phone nearby rather than leaving it in another room. If you need assistance during recovery, arrange regular help from family, friends or carers for tasks such as cleaning, laundry and carrying shopping.

Follow Your Individual Recovery Plan

A shoulder fracture does not require the same home setup for every patient. Your needs will depend on where the bone has broken, whether the fracture required surgery, your age, your mobility and how much support you have at home.

Many proximal humerus fractures take approximately six to twelve weeks to heal, but movement and strength can take longer to recover. Your specialist may recommend a sling, gradual exercises and restrictions on lifting or overhead movement during different stages of healing.

Do not introduce exercises or stop using your sling simply because the shoulder begins to feel better. Follow the timetable provided by your orthopaedic team or physiotherapist.

Some shoulder fractures require surgical fixation or, in selected cases, shoulder replacement. London Shoulder and Arm provides specialist trauma and fracture care, with treatment based on the type of injury and the needs of the individual patient.

Prepare Your Home for a Safer Recovery

The most useful home modifications after a shoulder fracture are usually simple: put essential items within easy reach, make sleeping and dressing easier, remove fall hazards and arrange help for tasks that require two hands or heavy lifting.

If you have sustained a shoulder fracture or are unsure what activities are safe during recovery, contact London Shoulder and Arm for a specialist assessment. Personalised advice can help you protect the healing shoulder and return to everyday activities safely.
