  • Cylindrical vessels are the most widely used shape in industrial settings. Their shape distributes pressure efficiently along the vessel walls, and they're relatively straightforward to fabricate, making them the go-to choice for storage tanks, separators, and reactors.
  • Spherical vessels distribute stress more evenly than any other shape, since every point on a sphere's surface is equidistant from its center. This makes them well suited for storing large volumes of gas under high pressure — think LPG or ammonia storage — though the complexity of fabrication makes them costlier to build.
  • Horizontal vessels are oriented lengthwise and often used where floor space is limited relative to available length, such as in separators and storage tanks at ground level.
  • Vertical vessels stand upright and are common in applications like distillation columns, reactors, and towers where fluid needs to flow or settle vertically through internal stages.
  • Vessels with hemispherical, ellipsoidal, or torispherical heads — the end caps that seal a cylindrical vessel — are chosen based on the pressure the vessel needs to withstand. Hemispherical heads offer the best strength-to-weight performance for high-pressure service, while ellipsoidal and torispherical heads are more economical for moderate pressure ranges.
