Battery-powered standalone units remain the simplest and cheapest option, and they're still common in single-family homes where a hardwired system isn't practical or required. Hardwired detectors, often with battery backup, are the standard for new construction and larger residential buildings, offering the reliability of a permanent power source without losing protection during an outage.

But the real shift is happening in connectivity. Interconnected systems — where one triggered alarm sets off every unit in a building — have become a baseline expectation in commercial and multi-family settings, and increasingly in single-family homes too. Both moves point to a market that's less about "does it detect smoke" and more about "how intelligently does it detect the right kind of smoke."

The smoke detector market isn't a flashy one, but it's a remarkably stable growth story: regulation guarantees a floor of demand, replacement cycles create recurring revenue, and smart home adoption keeps pulling average selling prices upward as consumers trade basic battery units for connected systems. The manufacturers likely to win the next few years are the ones that can make compliance easy, cut down on false alarms, and make a smoke detector feel like part of a smart home rather than a separate, forgotten device on the ceiling.
