Molecular Weight Distribution and Its Effect on Carboxylated SBR Latex Performance

Emulsion polymerization of carboxylated SBR latex involves a semi-batch process where styrene, butadiene, and carboxylic acid monomers are fed gradually into a reactor containing water, surfactant, initiator, and chain-transfer agents. The carboxyl monomer, often itaconic acid, is partitioned between the aqueous phase and the monomer droplets due to its water solubility, which influences the copolymer composition drift during the reaction. To achieve a homogeneous distribution of carboxyl groups across all polymer chains, manufacturers employ a delayed addition of the acid monomer, starting after 20–30% of the total monomer conversion. This tactic reduces the formation of highly carboxylated, water-soluble oligomers that could act as unwanted emulsifiers.

Particle size control in carboxylated SBR latex depends on the surfactant type and concentration. Anionic surfactants like sodium dodecyl sulfate generate smaller particles (80–120 nm) with narrow distributions, while nonionic surfactants yield coarser particles (150–200 nm) but offer better electrolyte tolerance. The carboxyl groups reside predominantly near the particle surface, as confirmed by conductometric titration, which shows that about 60–70% of total carboxyl content is accessible to aqueous base. This surface localization contributes to the latex’s mechanical stability during pumping and spraying operations. Gel content, influenced by crosslinking from divinylbenzene or accidental diene reactions, affects film swelling and tensile modulus; lower gel levels (below 30%) produce softer, more tacky films, while higher gel contents give rigid, solvent-resistant coatings.

Reaction temperature exerts a significant effect on polymerization rate and branching. Typical operations at 70–80°C yield conversion above 95% within 6–8 hours. Increasing the temperature to 90°C accelerates monomer consumption but promotes chain transfer to polymer, raising the gel fraction. Conversely, lower temperatures (60°C) generate linear polymers with broader molecular weight distribution, as measured by gel permeation chromatography. The carboxyl content is quantified by titration or Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, with absorption bands near 1700 cm⁻¹ indicating carbonyl stretching. For adhesive grades, a carboxyl content of 2.5–4.0% provides a favorable balance between adhesion and cohesion. Post-polymerization adjustments include stripping of residual monomers under vacuum and addition of biocides to prevent bacterial spoilage. The final product is filtered through 100-mesh screens to remove coagulum, which typically remains below 0.1% for well-controlled batches. These synthetic parameters collectively determine whether a carboxylated SBR latex performs as a soft binder, a hard structural adhesive, or an intermediate coating material.
