Lung Cancer and the Tissue Diagnostics Market: The NSCLC Opportunity
When a tumor is biopsied, the tissue sample often decides what treatment comes next. That is why tissue diagnostics, the tools and tests that analyze tissue to detect, classify, and characterize disease, has become central to cancer care. According to Grand View Research, the global tissue diagnostics market was valued at USD 9.4 billion in 2025. It is projected to reach USD 10.1 billion in 2026 and USD 18.6 billion by 2033, a CAGR of 9.1%.
Key Drivers & Market Trends
A growing cancer burden. Rising cancer incidence is the main growth engine. The Global Burden of Disease 2023 study estimated roughly 18.5 million new cancer cases and 10.4 million cancer deaths worldwide in 2023. Cases are forecast to reach about 30.5 million by 2050. More cancer means more biopsies and more histopathology work for hospitals and labs.
Precision oncology and companion diagnostics. Targeted therapies depend on tissue-based biomarker testing to identify which patients are eligible. Agilent's PD-L1 IHC 22C3 pharmDx assay is one example. It gained FDA approval as a companion diagnostic in endometrial cancer in 2024, and again for esophageal and gastroesophageal junction carcinoma in March 2026.
Digital pathology and AI. AI-enabled image analysis, automated staining, and telepathology are changing laboratory workflows. They improve efficiency, reduce interpretation variability, and extend specialist access to underserved regions. The industry is also consolidating around these capabilities. In May 2026, Roche announced its acquisition of PathAI to strengthen its AI-driven digital pathology and companion diagnostics portfolio.
The main restraint. Developing digital pathology systems, molecular assays, and companion diagnostics is expensive, and clinical validation and regulatory approval add cost and time. This weighs most heavily on small and mid-sized companies and on price-sensitive markets.

Market Segmentation Overview
The report segments the market by technology, modality, application, end use, and region.
- Technology: Immunohistochemistry (IHC) led in 2025 with a 25.9% revenue share. It is widely used to assess biomarkers such as PD-L1, HER2, ER, and PR. Digital pathology and workflow is the fastest-growing technology segment, at a projected 12.7% CAGR.
- Application: Breast cancer held the largest share at 50.7% and is expected to grow fastest. Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is also set for strong growth because diagnosis depends on biopsy-based tissue analysis.
- End use: Hospitals dominated with a 37.7% share. Contract research organizations (CROs) are expected to grow fastest as pharma and biotech companies outsource tissue analysis in drug development.
- Modality: The clinical segment led in 2025 and is projected to grow at 9.53%. The pharma/CRO/research segment is also expanding on the back of biomarker discovery and companion diagnostic development.
Regional Landscape
North America led in 2025 with a 44.6% revenue share. Its strengths include strong healthcare infrastructure, high spending, favorable reimbursement, and a dense concentration of industry players. In the U.S., the American Cancer Society projected about 2.04 million new cancer cases for 2025.
Europe is growing on rising cancer prevalence, screening programs, and research funding. Germany sees nearly 510,000 new cancer cases a year, according to the German Cancer Research Center. The UK is investing in oncology research infrastructure and digital pathology.
Asia Pacific is the fastest-growing region. China reported about 5.15 million new cancer cases in 2024, and the WHO recorded roughly 2.4 million new cases in its South-East Asia region in 2022. Expanding healthcare infrastructure and growing adoption of precision oncology are driving demand across China, India, Japan, and South Korea.
Latin America is growing steadily through healthcare investment and local partnerships. In the Middle East & Africa, rising cancer prevalence, better infrastructure, and digital pathology start-ups are opening new access, such as DataPathology's AI-driven diagnostic work in Africa.

Established leaders such as Roche build integrated ecosystems of instruments, reagents, and software, backed by acquisitions and regulatory approvals. Their strengths are global reach and R&D depth. Their weaknesses include high platform costs and dependence on proprietary systems. Emerging players such as BioGenex compete with niche biomarker assays and lower-cost, customizable products, though with a smaller global footprint.
Recent moves include QIAGEN opening a regional headquarters in Dubai in January 2024 and Merck KGaA opening a distribution center in Brazil in February 2024.
Looking Ahead
The tissue diagnostics market is set to grow steadily through 2033, driven by rising cancer incidence, precision oncology, and the shift to AI-enabled digital workflows. Companies that combine strong biomarker assays with automation and digital capabilities should be best placed to capture that growth.
