From Cruciate Tears to 3D-Printed Spines: What’s Reshaping the Veterinary Orthopedics Market
Pets are living longer, and owners increasingly expect them to stay mobile. That expectation is turning veterinary orthopedics from a niche specialty into one of the fastest-growing areas of animal healthcare. Here is a look at the numbers, the trends, and the segments shaping the market.
Key Market Statistics
The global veterinary orthopedics market was valued at USD 658.6 million in 2025. It is estimated at USD 717.4 million in 2026 and is projected to reach USD 1,361.2 million by 2033, a CAGR of 9.6% over 2026-2033.
- Regional leader: North America held 54.1% of revenue in 2025, backed by strong veterinary infrastructure, high pet spending, and growing pet insurance coverage.
- Leading application: TPLO (tibial plateau leveling osteotomy) accounted for 28.8% of the market.
- Leading animal type: Canines held 70.8%.
- Leading product: Implants held 55.7%.
- Leading end use: Veterinary hospitals and clinics held 89.4%.
The main demand drivers are rising pet ownership, higher spending on pet health, a growing burden of orthopedic disease, and wider insurance adoption.
Emerging Trends & Challenges
Trend 1: Pet obesity is feeding the caseload. Excess weight puts extra stress on joints and bones. The Association for Pet Obesity Prevention’s 2023 survey found that 59% of U.S. dogs and 61% of U.S. cats were overweight or obese in 2022. That raises the incidence of cruciate ligament injuries, osteoarthritis, and hip problems, and with them the demand for surgical care.
Trend 2: 3D printing is changing surgical planning. Anatomical models, surgical guides, and custom implants are being used for conditions such as angular limb deformities and spinal malformations. Guides are more common than printed implants so far, because they improve precision and shorten operating time. In 2024, Fusion Implants used bespoke 3D-printed spinal screws in a collaboration with Chestergates Veterinary Hospital to help a paralyzed puppy walk again. VCA Animal Hospitals also launched a dedicated 3D-printing lab for pet orthopedic surgery.
Trend 3: Consolidation and training investment. Key players are pursuing acquisitions, partnerships, and surgeon education. Examples include Movora (Vimian Group) acquiring Veterinary Transplant Services and Vimian’s purchase of New Generation Devices.
Challenge 1: Cost. TPLO, TTA, joint replacement, and fracture repair involve costly implants, imaging, and rehabilitation. Where pet insurance penetration is low, owners bear most of that cost.
Challenge 2: Access to specialists. Trained veterinary orthopedic surgeons are concentrated in major metropolitan areas, which slows adoption elsewhere, especially in emerging economies.

Product and Segment Insights
Product: Implants are the largest segment and are expected to keep that lead. Manufacturers are building implants for different species and sizes, and customization is improving outcomes. The portfolio covers TPLO plates, TTA plates, specialty plates, trauma plates, and other implants. Instruments make up the other main product category.
Application: The market is segmented into TPLO, TTA, joint replacement, trauma, and other applications. TPLO leads because cranial cruciate ligament rupture is among the most common causes of hind-limb lameness in dogs, particularly in breeds such as Labradors, Rottweilers, and Mastiffs. The “other” category, which covers corrective osteotomies and tibial tuberosity transposition, is expected to grow fastest. Patellar luxation drives much of that demand, especially in small breeds.
Animal type: Canines dominate, but felines are projected to grow at the highest CAGR. Cat ownership is rising, diagnosis is improving, and treatment options are expanding.
End use: Hospitals and clinics hold the vast majority of the market because they have the diagnostic and post-surgical infrastructure. Academic and research centers are the fastest-growing group, supported by R&D funding.
Regions: Asia Pacific is a key growth area. A rising middle class, pet humanization, and expanding veterinary facilities are pushing demand in China and India.
