Green Methanol Market Demand: The Rising Shift Toward Sustainable Marine Transportation
Demand for green methanol is being shaped by shipping decisions, regulation, and chemical end uses. Polaris Market Research reports that the green methanol market was valued at USD 5.42 billion in 2025 and is projected to grow from USD 8.74 billion in 2026 to USD 409.38 billion by 2034, at a CAGR of 53.3% from 2026 to 2034. This article examines the demand-side forces and applications that matter to producers, shipowners, and chemical manufacturers.
Shipping Industry Drives Demand
The report describes the shipping industry as an important area for the market as shipowners add vessels that can operate on methanol alongside conventional marine fuels. Dual-fuel methanol vessels give operators the option to use methanol while retaining fuel flexibility on routes where supply is still developing. Methanol marine fuel is being considered mainly for container shipping, with interest extending to bulk carriers, car carriers, and other vessel types.
This is increasing the need for methanol bunkering at major ports. DNV recorded 61 methanol-fuelled vessel orders in 2025 and noted that more than 450 methanol-capable vessels were in operation or on order by the end of 2025. These vessels provide a future customer base as production and methanol bunkering infrastructure expands. Polaris names Proman, Methanex Corporation, Cepsa, and Carbon Recycling International among companies active in marine fuel supply, shipping use, and CO2-to-methanol production. Infrastructure remains a challenge, including storage, transport logistics, and bunkering facilities in ports.
IMO Net-Zero Framework Timeline
The IMO Net-Zero Framework was approved at MEPC 83 in April 2025. It forms part of draft amendments to MARPOL Annex VI and includes a global marine fuel standard based on greenhouse gas fuel intensity, along with a pricing mechanism for emissions. Adoption was planned for October 2025, but the extraordinary session was adjourned for one year. The framework was still under discussion at MEPC 84 in April 2026.
The original timetable anticipated entry into force in 2027, but the report says the delay means that timing is no longer fixed. Polaris notes that the IMO Net-Zero Framework remains relevant because its proposed fuel standard would place greater importance on the lifecycle emissions of marine fuels, and its forecast assumptions account for the delayed adoption path.
Chemical Feedstock and Derivatives
By application, chemical feedstock accounted for the largest share at 63.88% in 2025, as methanol is a basic raw material for formaldehyde, acetic acid, dimethyl ether, and other derivatives. By derivative, formaldehyde is the leading segment. It is an ingredient for wood panel resins, adhesives, and coatings, and demand from construction and manufacturing industries contributes to the segment's dominance. Manufacturers can use green methanol in formaldehyde production, provided all necessary conditions are met. More broadly, methanol is used as a raw material in acetic acid, plastics, and paints, and green methanol can replace conventional methanol without altering its function in the process.

The methanol-to-olefins and methanol-to-propylene segment is projected to grow at a CAGR of 52.7%, giving green methanol a role as a low-carbon raw material beyond fuel. The fuel application segment is projected to grow at a CAGR of 55.6%, driven by blending mandates and policies supporting renewable energy in transportation.
Sustainable Aviation Fuel and Fuel Cells
The report identifies an opportunity in sustainable aviation fuel, as green methanol can act as an intermediate through the methanol-to-jet process. In July 2026, ETFuels selected the Port of Immingham in the UK for its e-SAF project, which will use green methanol produced in Texas as feedstock for methanol-to-jet production. Polaris also points to methanol fuel cells, especially for portable and backup power systems, as a potential application, and to growing focus on carbon intensity certification to document feedstock and emissions. Certification can differentiate methanol by feedstock, production process, and associated emissions, and it enables buyers to compare products made through different routes.
Regional Outlook
North America is projected to grow at a CAGR of 58.7%, while Latin America is projected to grow at 50.8% and the Middle East and Africa at 48.9%. Asia Pacific led the market with a 66.5% share in 2025 and Europe held 19.6%. In August 2026, HyOrc received approval for a €6.7 million grant to support its waste-to-methanol project in Portugal.
Key Players
Key players include ABEL Energy Pty Ltd, ANDRITZ, Avaada, C1 Green Chemicals AG, Carbon Recycling International (CRI), Cepsa, China Tianying (CNTY), Element 1 Corp., Enerkem, Methanex Corporation, Mitsubishi Gas Chemical Company, Inc., Proman, Shenergy Group, Södra, SunGas Renewables, thyssenkrupp Uhde GmbH, Veolia, and WasteFuel. The report notes that technology firms are partnering with project developers to improve methanol synthesis and reduce costs, and that collaboration with fuel producers and consumers can help secure long-term supply agreements.
Conclusion
Shipping fleets, regulatory timing, and chemical end uses define demand in the green methanol market. With USD 5.42 billion in 2025 and a projected USD 409.38 billion by 2034 at a 53.3% CAGR, producers that align with both fuel and feedstock demand are well positioned.
