The Shanghai International Film Festival (SIFF), now in its 27th edition, has firmly established itself as one of Asia’s most prestigious cinematic events. Held annually in China’s cultural and financial capital, SIFF is more than a film showcase—it is a celebration of global storytelling, artistic innovation, and cross-cultural dialogue. To get more news about shanghai international movie festival, you can citynewsservice.cn official website.

Founded in 1993, SIFF is one of the few A-category film festivals recognized by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations (FIAPF). Over the years, it has grown into a dynamic platform that bridges East and West, offering filmmakers, critics, and audiences a unique opportunity to engage with cinema from around the world.

The 2025 edition of SIFF was a landmark event, featuring over 1,500 screenings across 47 cinemas in Shanghai and neighboring cities. The festival’s centerpiece, the Golden Goblet Awards, honored outstanding achievements in international cinema. This year, the top prize for Best Feature Film went to Black Red Yellow, a poignant rural drama by Kyrgyz director Aktan Arym Kubat. The Jury Grand Prix was shared between Japan’s On Summer Sand and China’s Wild Nights, Tamed Beasts, the latter also earning Wan Qian the Best Actress award2.

SIFF 2025 also spotlighted emerging voices through its Asia New Talent section. Chinese director Bian Zhuo’s historical epic As the Water Flows won Best Film, while Sri Lanka’s Riverstone received accolades for Best Script and Cinematography. These awards reflect SIFF’s commitment to nurturing new talent and promoting diverse narratives across Asia.

Beyond the awards, SIFF is known for its forward-thinking programming. This year’s festival embraced cutting-edge themes such as artificial intelligence in filmmaking, with Qiu Sheng’s My Father’s Son receiving the Artistic Achievement Award for its exploration of AI and identity. The festival also hosted the Belt and Road Film Week, fostering collaboration among filmmakers from countries along the Belt and Road Initiative.

International participation was notably strong in 2025, with European filmmakers making a significant impact. Germany and Switzerland were well represented, with Nicolas Steiner’s surrealist film You Believe in Angels, Mr. Drowak? winning Best Cinematography. The presence of such diverse voices underscores SIFF’s role as a truly global festival.

The festival’s jury was led by Italian director Giuseppe Tornatore, best known for Cinema Paradiso. His presence added a touch of cinematic nostalgia and gravitas to the event. Tornatore’s masterclass, held during the festival, drew large crowds and emphasized the enduring power of cinema to inspire and connect people across cultures.

As Shanghai continues to position itself as a global cultural hub, SIFF plays a vital role in shaping the city’s creative identity. It not only showcases cinematic excellence but also fosters dialogue, innovation, and international cooperation. With each edition, SIFF reaffirms its status as a beacon of artistic expression in the heart of Asia.
