Major studio fare dominated the Producers Guild of America’s best-picture slate this year, with five high-profile releases earning nominations: A Beautiful Mind, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, Moulin Rouge and Shrek.

The inclusion of Shrek marks the first time an animated feature has been singled out in the PGA’s top film category.

Together these five titles have hauled roughly $869 million at the U.S. box office so far, and about $1.9 billion worldwide — well ahead of the combined domestic take of last year’s nominees at the same point ($381 million).

Studio distribution: Universal handles A Beautiful Mind domestically while DreamWorks distributes it overseas; Harry Potter is a Warner Bros. release; The Lord of the Rings comes from New Line; Moulin Rouge is with Fox; DreamWorks also represents Shrek.

Historically the PGA list has been a useful Oscar bellwether: in each of the past three seasons, three of the five PGA picks went on to receive Academy Award best-picture nominations. The PGA’s Darryl F. Zanuck Producer of the Year honor has aligned with the Oscar best-picture winner nine times in the award’s 12-year history, including Gladiator last year.

This year’s predictive power may be less certain after the guild expanded its voting base by about 300 members — roughly 1,600 total — following a merger with the American Association of Producers.

On television, premium cable led the nominations. HBO secured six of the 15 TV nods, with entries like The Sopranos and Six Feet Under in the drama category and Sex and the City in comedy. HBO’s longform contenders include 61*, Band of Brothers and Wit.

NBC collected five TV nominations: Law & Order and The West Wing for drama, and Frasier, Friends and Will & Grace in comedy. CBS’s CSI: Crime Scene Investigation earned a drama-series nod, while Fox’s Malcolm in the Middle was recognized in comedy. ABC placed Anne Frank and Life with Judy Garland: Me and My Shadows among its longform nominees.

Producer names were not released with the nominations; those credits will be revealed on Feb. 13 as the PGA continues an accreditation review for both film and television races. Producers excluded from the list will have 48 hours to appeal their omission.

Earlier PGA honors already announced this season include a milestone award for Robert Wise, lifetime achievement trophies for Lawrence Gordon and Carsey-Werner-Mandabach, and Hall of Fame inductions for The Manchurian Candidate, Network, Happy Days and Maude.

All winners will be revealed March 3 at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.

“Our nominating panel chose motion pictures that combine broad storytelling, memorable characters and bold cinematic scope,” said PGA awards co-chairs Bruce Cohen and Debra Hill, praising the slate’s ambition.

Past PGA selections that later won the Academy Award for best picture include Driving Miss Daisy, Dances With Wolves, The Silence of the Lambs, Schindler’s List, Forrest Gump, The English Patient, Titanic and American Beauty.

Last year the PGA nominations also foreshadowed the Academy’s field, with Almost Famous, Billy Elliot, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Erin Brockovich joining Gladiator among the guild’s picks.

In PGA TV history, Sex and the City took the Danny Thomas comedy prize last year after the guild split series categories for the first time; The Sopranos had been the sole series winner in 2000.
