The Week 18 battle between the Saints and Falcons could have had the NFC South title on the line but that chance was spoiled when the Buccaneers defeated the Panthers.New Orleans was still playing for a potential playoff spot at the time, though, and it showed no mercy all the way through its final offensive snap. The Saints held a comfortable 41-17 lead over the Falcons and the fourth quarter's two-minute warning had already pa sed. Tyrann Curtis Granderson Jersey Mathieu had just picked off Atlanta's backup QB Logan Woodside but came up a yard short of a touchdown, getting brought down at the one. Both teams had already replaced the starters as backup quarterback Jameis Winston went under center in what appeared to be the "victory" formation to take a knee and end the game.Instead, Winston surprisingly handed the ball off to Jamaal Williams for a touchdown, catching the defense off guard.Take it away Jamaal | : CBS New Orleans Saints (@Saints) The late score piled on New Orleans' blowout victory, defeating Atlanta 48-17. The decision caused a heated exchange between Falcons head coach Arthur Smith and Saints head coach Dennis Allen, but Winston ended up owning up to the "team decision."MORE:After Winston cleared the air on why he and the team decided to go for a touchdown, he got into a bizarre back-and-forth with a reporter who "respectfully disagreed" with the decision.Jameis Winston explains 'team decision' on late TDBackup quarterback Winston addre sed the media after the game, admitting that head coach Allen had called for the Saints to kneel the ball. Winston said it was a "team decision" to ignore the coach's call and go for a touchdown instead. However, the cheerful nature of his response appeared to have rubbed one of the reporters the wrong way, leading to an awkward exchange. The reporter asked Winston if the team regretted the decision to go for the touchdown."Do we regret scoring 41 points on them? Do you think we regret that?" Winston said."You do have to play these guys twice a year," The reporter responded."We already played them twice. How do you feel about it? Tell me how you feel about it?" Winston replied."Not good. You gotta play these guys twice a year," The reporter said back."What about it makes you not feel good about it?" Winston said."The head coach tells you to kneel it out. If you're asking my opinion, I think you should've kneeled it out," The reporter replied. The two went back and forth for a little longer, stating how they were trying to handle the situation as respectfully as po sible. You can watch the full exchange below (1:40 mark), courtesy of Fox 8's Garland Gillen.Jameis Winston apologized to Dennis Allen because the play call was "victory". But also explained to Allen it was a "team decision" to go for the Saints TD. "We decided as a team to do it." Garland Gillen (@garlandgillen) As for Winston and the team's decision to go for the touchdown, he chalked it up to wanting to get Williams a score."I asked the guys, I said, 'What do you wanna do?' We know how much Jamaal Williams means to this team. And I understood from DA's perspective. DA didn't condone that at all. However, we decided as a team to do it."It's worth noting that last season with the Lions, Williams led the NFL with 17 rushing touchdowns. His touchdown in the final minute of the Saints' season was his first of the 2023 campaign.MORE:Winston continued to defend the team's decision to go for six."We got an interception to the one-yard line. If we scored, would it still have been disrespectful? ... We had the opportunity and decided to go for it ," Winston said."... I didn't mean or want to disrespect. That was not my intention. My intention was to lead the team that I've been with the entire year, and we made a collective decision that we wanted to get one of our guys, who fight with blood, sweat and tears every game, into the end zone. And imma feel good about that," Winston said with a smile on his face.Even with the blowout win, the Saints still mi sed the playoffs by way of a three-way tiebreaker as the Packers claimed the final NFC Wild Card spot.
