The Patriots raised some eyebrows after the NFL Draft, signing undrafted free agent D'Eriq King in addition to drafting Bailey Zappe.After Julius Erving Jersey drafting Mac Jones last year and ostensibly locking him in as the quarterback of the future, adding two QBs in draft season could be seen as a red flag, but the plan for Bill Belichick is becoming a bit more clear.The Zappe selection makes sense in a vacuum. He was a depth pick so Jones staying healthy isn't the end-all-be-all of New England's season. But King, a Houston and Miami product, looks like he wasn't picked up for his quarterbacking.MORE:"I talked to Patriots director of personnel Matt Groh, and he was excited," King said, . "I'm thankful for the opportunity. He told me I'll do a little bit of everything receiver, quarterback, running back whatever I can do to stick."King was a standout in his college career. He threw for 8,378 yards and had 76 touchdowns to just 19 interceptions. More to the point of why he's in New England, King also had 423 carries for 2,055 yards and 32 touchdowns, while also catching 61 pa ses for 520 yards. In other words, he'll be plug and play offense for Belichick's offense.King wasn't drafted due to concerns about how his game would translate in addition to shoulder surgery that limited him to just three games last year."I was kind of prepared for that," King said. "I didn't have a good season. It got cut short because of injuries. Still, there was that little feeling when the draft is going that something might happen and this team might draft me in this round. I was prepared for this moment."MORE:The Patriots have been known to find some diamonds in the rough after the draft. Indeed, current backup quarterback Brian Hoyer has had a long career serving as a journeyman backup since making the roster as a UDFA in 2009. But King's goals are a bit loftier, and they start with making the roster."Definitely make the team, but I want to make plays as well," he said. "I want to do what I can to be seen and have the opportunity to make the team. I'm going to try to get on special teams, too."That last line will be music to Belichick's ears. Special teams ace Matthew Slater is one of Belichick's favorite players this side of Lawrence Taylor. If King can stand out there, he could well be in red, white and blue for a long time.
